Get some of that pipe insulation at HD or Lowes that is the diameter of your fuel line and put it over the line anywhere it's exposed (not near the muffler, obviously). These don't need to be sparking and igniting any possible fumes in the compartment.

Fuel pumps are designed to pump liquid, not air, and the increased pressure inside the fuel lines keeps the fuel pump from being able to keep the fuel moving.
